Moving List… check!

01 Apr Moving List… check!

Moving is a process—sometimes a very cumbersome process because of the sheer number of items we own. Generally, we don’t realize how many DVDs we’ve purchased, how many dolls or trains are crammed into a toy chest, or how many photo albums we’ve filled over the years. These aren’t just goods or things, they are memories and beloved possessions, and they collectively make a house a home. But when it’s time to pack, where do you begin? How do you tackle everything for the big move without feeling overwhelmed?

There’s an old but time-tested expression: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of pain. Basically, it means that it’s better to try to avoid a problem in the first place, rather than trying to fix it once it arises. Proper planning and organization is crucial to a successful, stress-free move. A task list is not only one of the best organizational tools, it’s also one of the cheapest and easiest.

There’s something to be said for good old-fashioned pen and paper. There’s no better feeling than being able to complete and cross off an outstanding job that’s been lagging. But there are also a wealth of on-line sites and smart phone apps available to keep your move on track and keep you organized and motivated. Take advantage of all the options out there—using an iPhone, Blackberry, Droid or iPad app means you’ll always have your packing and moving list handy and can easily email it to a spouse or roommate.

There are plenty of general To-Do lists you can use. Or, try one of the many traveling, packing and moving apps available. Packing & Packing Pro developed by Quinn Genzel, for example, includes a pre-departure to-do. And New Gravity Venture’s Moving List application not only has pre-populated To-Do List tasks designed to give you a timeline of when you should purchase boxes and moving supplies or contact utility companies, but also includes customizable tasks such as job relocation and new address information. There’s even a fun packing decider to help you figure out whether to keep or dump that old recliner.

Neighbors Moving & Storage also offers you a detailed and extensive Moving List on its website. It has checkboxes, is printable, and it’s free. The list is organized as a countdown to Moving Day and includes items many of us could surely overlook including: arranging a transfer of school records and auto registration; getting referrals from your Doctor; and clearing your safety deposit box. Moving involves countless details. Keep your stress level at bay by planning and remaining organized. Neighbors Moving will guide you every step of the way!
